MISSION STATEMENT

The uMngeni AIDS Centre seeks to intervene in the AIDS crisis in the uMngeni River district by drawing alongside individuals and families whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS and offering them hope, love and material support, as well as contributing to preventive and supportive education.

VOLUNTEERS

  • Fund Raising. Assistance with sorting, pricing and selling at Fetes and Fairs, etc.

  • Collection Box distribution and counting of money.

  • Assisting in office - reception and office tasks.

The HIV/AIDS Pandemic is very serious. Does it affect you? Yes!

This is the worst disaster in human history. Over 42 million people are infected worldwide.

1 in every 3 people are HIV+ in KwaZulu Natal.

Who does uMac serve?

Mostly women and children infected with HIV, living in dire poverty in township or rural settlements to the north of Pietermaritzburg in the uMngeni Municipal area.

What makes uMac different?

We do not undertake direct interventions from outside communities. Instead, we offer services to local community-based initiatives to strengthen and support their work.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

  • Donate food or clothing for families in crisis or toys for children.

  • Call if you'd like to work as a volunteer.

  • Donate items for home-based care kits (call to find out more).

  • Come alongside a family in need.

  • Offer skills training to enable someone to generate income.

  • Donate cash to support our work.

uMAC'S SERVICES INCLUDE

  • Empowering of community-based initiatives by providing access to project management and other training and support.

  • Supporting community-based health worker volunteers and assisting them to provide a more professional service.

  • Offering transport to medical care for impoverished people needing AIDS treatment.

  • Undertaking research and evaluation work to strengthen local initiatives.

  • Offering access to other partnerships and networks, as well as possible donors.
